Guess what? It’s Wednesday so that means it’s another Wittering Wednesday… I have said in the previous posts (here) I like to write and I hope you guys like to read it but I know that beauty review after beauty review may get a little monotonous. I want to point out that whatever ‘topic’ it is they will be my views, thoughts and opinions, I am open to any kind of discussion about these in the comments so feel free to leave your thoughts and experiences. Shall we get on with it then?
Today I have one of my blogging besties taking over; the lovely JESSEH (aka Jess) from Jessica In Your Ear. I have known Jess about 18 months now, she’s funny, always so well dressed and so bloody lovely. She has some great outfit posts on her blog too so if fashion is your thing you certainly need to check her out. We have a bloggers Whatsapp chat, which is mostly just a group of Leeds bloggers moaning about men, and from this chat Jess wanted to write todays post, so over to JESSEH…
I always love Hayley’s Wittering Wednesday posts so I’m so excited to be finally contributing to this awesome series. Recently I have joined the dating world, and more specifically the online dating world. Despite the fact that I chat to fellow bloggers online all the time, talking to boys is a little bit different!
However, I didn’t find the leap to the online dating world as strange as some probably do, thanks to blogging. After all, I talk to people ‘from the internet’ all the time and frequently meet people in real life, who I have previously only chatted to on the internet. I even went on a Bloggers’ Holiday with a gang of bloggers who I mostly hadn’t met before we went away together, so blogging has reduced my fear of meeting someone from the big bad world of the internet in real life. Also, let’s admit that blogging can help your dating profile in many ways. We’re all practised in providing that snappy bio, with the perfect added element of humour and charm. Twitter chats have honed our ability to make small talk (if mainly about make-up) and, damn, do we know how to take a great selfie for our Insta and dating profile.
But let’s get a little more serious. Blogging is probably my major ‘hobby.’ It’s what I spend my most free time doing and events are a great way to socialise and try new things. But how do you tell a stranger about it? Blogging has become a lot more recognised and accepted in general, but it’s still potentially seen as rather self-involved, particularly fashion blogging. There are definitely assumptions made about you and I am always asked about the ‘free things’ I get, which can be more than a little frustrating.
For a long time, I avoided any mention or hint of my blog during my dating app conversations, even if that meant I looked like I had no social life at all. During my first date, however, the truth came out. My date had looked at my Facebook profile, where I am open about promoting my blog. The awkward question came out; “so what is this blog that you do exactly?” I’m terrible at explaining my blog, as I write about pretty much everything and am yet to find that perfect snappy answer to “what’s your unique selling point?” My standard answer has become that I talk about myself on the internet! All in all, my dates have been impressed by my blog rather than judgemental and I’ve been pleasantly surprised by quite how interesting and exciting they think my blogging is.
In the end, I came to the conclusion that I want any future relationship to be with someone who is involved, at least on some level, with my blog. Therefore they need to know about it at some point, so why not sooner rather than later? I know one blogger who includes her blog on her Tinder profile, if only for the added hits this means she gets, which I think is frankly fantastic and I wish I could be this confident about my blog! Do you ever mention your blog in your dating life?
Embrace your blogging. It’s more unique than a photo with a drugged up tiger, after all.
