I’m very edgy when it comes to homeware, and by edgy I mean boring. My entire house is monochrome, surprise surprise, although I do have a tiny splash of colour in my kitchen by way of some stacked coloured cups. Because I live the monochrome life I have to pick homeware pieces carefully and go for something a little quirkier so my house doesn’t just become a bland sea of mono. My search for monochrome yet ‘quirky’ pieces led me to the homewares section of UncommonGoods; they have some truly beautiful pieces in there with the bucket chairs being a firm favourite of mine. I love that the company focus on promoting the creative work of both small and large designers, and also focus on making the products more responsible; like recycling and handmaking. They very much focus on an environmental stance and this sits really well with me, as consumers we should certainly be shopping more responsibly where we can.
Once I discovered the site I became obsessed with their homeware, but they also offer a whole range of other bits and bobs such as anniversary gifts, unique gifts for men & bridesmaid gifts; which aren’t really applicable to me (cos forever a singleton), although I could celebrate mine & Percy’s anniversary I guess?! Although I am going to be a Maid of Honour next year so I guess I could treat myself to a bridesmaid gift. The first thing I found was Percy in candle form so I am obviously head over heels in love with that, a little black kitty like Percy except this one won’t scratch me, head butt me awake of a morning or pee in the wash basket. Another cute little decorative piece is the Marimo Moss Ball Light Bulb Terrarium (£28.66), this would look perfect next to my Bulb Shaped Touch Lamp on my bedside table. I am not brilliant at keeping plants alive, so terrariums are great for me as they’re pretty low maintenance.
Now on to the statement investment pieces…. When it comes to spending a lot of money on an item, I want them to be pretty plain(ish) and something that’s timeless. I would hate to spend hundreds on something for it to be out of fashion the next season or be something I couldn’t work in to pretty much any colour scheme. I live in an apartment, so the Fire Escape Shelf (£81.07) would look amazing right next to my balcony doors, as sadly we don’t have the classic NYC style fire escapes over here. Maybe I could pop my bulb terrarium on it, along with some ‘arty’ looking books that I have. The 2 statement investment pieces I would love are the Convertible Bucket Stool (£245.66) and the Einstein Table Lamp (£343.09), because they’re cute af but also pretty versatile to match with pretty much any trend. The bucket stool would be perfect for my apartment too, as it’s multi use; if you keep the padded part up it’s a stool, if you turn it over it goes to a table or you can remove it and use it to store things in. Pretty functional for apartment living.
