Bags under the eyes, pasty skin, crows feet, pimples, anyone? Errmmm, no thanks! I didn’t think so. There is a very good reason why we call it getting our beauty sleep. Because when we don’t get enough of it, things can start to get pretty ugly, pretty quickly – trust me, I know as I suffer from insomnia on and off.
And I’m not just referring to our physical appearance here either; poor sleep can increase the risk of a whole host of physical and mental conditions – like stress, depression, diabetes, heart disease and even premature death. None of which are a good look! So, now that’s out in the open I am sure you’ll agree with me that getting enough shuteye is vitally important both for our external appearance and our internal wellbeing.
Below are my top 3 tips on how to get the most out of your beauty sleep, to ensure you wake up looking and feeling great every single morning. Are you ready for this? Yes. Then here we go…
1. Use an Eye Mask
There are many great products out there to help your skin stay soft, young and supple. An eye mask is one of them. Yes, I know they might make you look like your mad Aunt Marjorie but an eye mask is worth its weight in gold when it comes to improving your beauty sleep. Firstly donning one of these little beauties provides a great way to block out any annoying light pollution, and help you sleep more soundly.
Secondly, a sleep mask is a great way to prevent ‘sleep wrinkles’ from sneaking on to that lovely face of yours – don’t be shy, we all get them, mine is between my eyes on my forehead. This is especially true if you happen to be a stomach sleeper and like to smush that pretty nose of yours into your pillow. A sleep mask will to some extent prevent creases forming when your face is all mashed up. My advice? Treat yourself and get a nice silk eye mask, it will feel a lot nicer against your skin than some of the cheaper versions out there. And don’t forget you need the right earplugs for sleeping too!
Another added bonus of a night mask is that when your fella gets up early and starts flicking on the lights you will be perfectly undisturbed. Don’t feel guilty about this, having a lie in is perfectly fine, research indicates girls need more shuteye than our male counterparts.
2. Sleep on your Back
Us humans beans spend an inordinate amount of time lying around in bed – a full third of our lives. Yet despite our fondness for sleep very few of us give much thought to how we do it. We just get under the sheets, toss and turn and then eventually fall to sleep. The majority of us adopt sleep positions that aren’t good for our bodies or looks – I’m talking about you stomach sleepers again here.
If you sleep on your stomach you are in effect spending a third of each day smushing your face into your pillow and arching your back in a way it doesn’t really like to be arched. Your pillows are of course lovely and soft but they aren’t as clean as you probably think. This is not a criticism of your hygiene, it’s just a fact of life. Unless you are swapping your pillowcase every morning then your feathery bed friend is likely covered in at least a couple of days worth of sweat, dead skin, and old moisturizer. While you slumber your face will be marinating in this concoction – yeah, sounds nice doesn’t it haha.
The solution? Simple. Sleep on your back. Facing the sky will give your skin a break and it’s much much better for your posture. Once you’ve made the switch you will likely not only notice your skin clearing up but you may find your sore neck and achy back become a thing of the past. You’re welcome! If you are finding it painful to sleep on your back as you sleep then you might want to invest in a better mattress that will support your body and relieve pressure on your back. This doesn’t have to expensive either as there are sites like http://leesamattresscoupons.com/ available for you to use to save you money.
3. Drink More Water
I’ve saved my top tip for last. And this is not just beauty advice but life advice. Drink more water. One of the top reasons we sometimes wake up looking a little bit worse for wear in the morning despite having an otherwise good night’s sleep is that we’re dehydrated. Maybe you simply haven’t taken in enough liquids, or more likely you’ve had a few alcoholic or caffeinated beverages close to bedtime when you should’ve been winding down. Or maybe you forget to cleanse! Oh my, don’t tell me you forgot to cleanse! Tut tut!
Whatever the reason if our skin is under watered it punishes us when we wake up by looking blotchy, pasty and tired. And you know what – we deserve that. Our skin puts up with a lot, we cover it in makeup, walk around the dirty streets all day and then we forget to give it a drink. No wonder it rebels. Treat your skin like you would a delicate flower and keep it well watered.
Well, there you have it – my three top tips for making sure you wake up looking and feeling like a sleeping beauty each and every morning. Happy napping folks, you can thank me later.
