Fashions and trends always come back round, but for me the whole 90s revival is a little strange. Perhaps because I was actually alive and remember the decade, I find it weird when I see a young 20 year old rocking the bad fashions of the decade all in the name of FASHUN… Thin af brows better not rear their ugly head again, that’s for sure!
It’s not only the fashion that’s coming back around though, the makeup and music is too – thankfully we’ve moved on from the tech of a dial up modem and cassette player. So to celebrate the resurgence of the greatest decade (I’m not biased at all), here’s a little look at the best of…
It was a strange mix of fashions in the 90s, you were either into the raver look, the grunge look or the more poppy look of the Spice Girls. I had a mix of poppy and grungey and was a big fan of baggy trousers with cute little crop top and those dresses that split right up the front and had hot pants under – I think they may have been called butterfly dresses? There’s a pic of me on holiday doing karaoke with my cousins in the 90s, complete with my poker straight 90s hair and butterfly dress #CoolAF. There was a weird craze of over layering too, little slip dresses paired with a checked shirt and massive oversized cardigan, or trousers with a skirt over the top – I mean, it was a look that’s for sure.
I actually still have some magazines from the 90s in a drawer, I might have to dust them off this weekend and get some original fashion inspo.
90s music has to be the best, right? From indie, Brit pop, grunge, pop, rap and boybands there really was something for everyone! My boyband of choice was East 17 FYI. Obviously the big one on everyone’s mind at the moment is obviously The Spice Girls as they’re currently touring. I remember the hysteria they caused when they first came onto the scene, life long friends falling out over who was Baby Spice – I always wanted to be Geri! It still amazes me today how they influenced the fashion of the time so majorly, even today we call a large platform trainer a Spice Girl’s shoe.
The 90s was the decade it all changed for tech; the internet became common in households, despite it being slow af dial up… I mean have you ever tried to download pirated music from Limewire via the joys of a dial up connection with your Gran trying to make a phone call at the same time?
Not only was the internet now a must have, but so were mobile phones! Who’d a thunk that the thing we all can’t live without and that’s constantly stuck in our hand is not actually that old. I was quite lucky and got my first mobile phone when I was around 10/11 (95ish), it was a Motorolla on the network 1-2-1 which is now known as EE. My phone number ended in 666 and a £10 top up lasted me FOREVER. It was a strange thing to have as I was one of the first in my area to own a mobile (my uncle owned an electronics shop), so although I was considered cool, I had no one to bloody call or text as I was the only one with one!
Are you a 90s child? I so what are your favourite memories from the decade?
