As a self-confessed makeup hoarder yet someone who loves a little bit of neatness and order in my life, you can imagine what it’s like for me to have a ‘dressing table clear out’. It’s difficult, let me tell you. Recently I decided to give my DIY Designer Hollywood Mirror dressing table a little clear out, and boy did I learn a few things about my makeup habits.
In case you weren’t aware I actually did a little bit of DIY to get my perfect dressing table, which you can see in the photos. The reasoning behind this is I wanted a hella fancy dresser but also as I live in an apartment block, with another opposite, I tend to keep my bedroom curtains closed. Due to this there’s a distinct lack of natural light to get my brows just right. Which is why a Hollywood Mirror was the perfect solution for me, it looks beautiful, it’s not too overbearing and it gives of perfect lighting to be able to see what I’m doing.
I have the white gloss 80×60 cm version which is the perfect size to fit on an IKEA table top, which I then propped on top of 2 5 set Alex drawers. To perfect my dresser I have tried lots of different storage solutions for inside the drawers, and kinda have it just how I like at the moment. Anyway, on to what I learnt when clearing out my DIY Designer Hollywood Mirror dressing table.
You Can Have Too Many Eyeliners
When I decided to have a winter clear out I went through each and every drawer, and I was in for quite a shock when I got to the mascara/liner drawer. First of all there were about 20 mascaras in there, but that’s OK as I wear mascara every day so get through it quickly, however there were 16 black pencil eyeliners. I wear eyeliner once a blue moon, mainly if I do a smokey eye, so why I need 16 of the same colour and formula is beyond me. I could probably own 5 and they would last me a lifetime. I would like to blame this on the blog and PR samples, however most of them I had actually bought. Don’t ask me why, as I am still trying to answer that myself. I think I have makeup issues.
Eyeshadow Palettes Are the Devil
Yes, it lovely to have all your shadows prettily packed in a beautiful palette, but have you tried storing 50 eyeshadow palettes in 1 Alex drawer? WHY ARE THEY ALL DIFFERENT SIZES?! Why isn’t there an industry standard palette size? Is it wrong that it annoys me so much that the palette drawer doesn’t look all uniform and neat? And whilst we are on eyeshadows why can’t ColourPop design their formula so it can be depotted; let’s not even get in to the hassles of single shadows.
I Have Too Much
Yes, I will admit I have too much of most things, but the main thing I seem to be struggling to store is haircare. Why do I even have so much of it? I wash my hair about once every 7-10 days so there’s no need for me to have 2 drawers worth of hair products. On that same train of thought is there any need for over 30 darkened berry lipsticks? OK, that’s a stupid question cos we all know the answer is yes.
I know I am a hoarder and I know my blog makes this so much worse, as I get more makeup in a week than I would ever previously have bought. Yet I still go out and buy makeup, I still refuse to throw away that mascara that’s a little past its best day, because it’s prettily packaged.
It got to the point where my dressing table was starting to resemble a boxing day sale at Boots, so I have vowed to keep on top of the situation in 2017 and have a clear up and clear out every 2 months. Whether I make it past the second clear out we shall see, but something needs to be done – either a clear out or I buy a bigger house for all my eyeliners I rarely use.
I recommend you don’t hoard your makeup as badly as I do and find yourself with 16 black pencil eye liners. I also cannot recommend making your own style dresser enough. Something similar to what I made would have cost me over £600 and even then wouldn’t have been perfect. This beauty costs around £300 to make and is incredibly sturdy. Plus, the bulbs last forever; I have likely had these on for at least an hour every day since March, and even longer when I was doing my Halloween makeup looks.
Are you a makeup hoarder? How many black pencil eyeliners do you own *prays for someone to say more than 16*
